DNMTC's History

The people of Denkyira have longed yearned for a tertiary institution since 1961, when a teacher training college was moved from the current Community Centre to Sefwi Wiaso.   In 2006, the Municipal Assembly of Upper Denkyira East made a request to the Kuffour administration for a nursing school but to their surprise it was sent to Twifo Praso. This made the people very disappointed but they kept pursuing this agenda through established government functionaries for a health training school to be established within Upper Denkyira.

In the later part of 2007, through the efforts of Hon. Abraham Dwuma Odoom, then deputy Minister of Health, a team of experts from the Ministry of Health, Nursing and Midwifery Council specifically, Mr. Felix Nyante, (now registrar) joined some key members of Upper Denkyira East Municipal Assembly and the Denkyira Traditional Council, to look for a suitable place for the establishment of a health assistants training school. The team first visited AngloGoldAshanti,Ayanfuri and later,  Compound (staff residence for old State Gold Mines) at Dunkwa-On-Offin but found these places not suitable for the establishment of an academic institution. The team, eventually settled on the abandoned administration block / offices of Continental Alluvial Dredges.

The Ministry of Health through Hon. Dwuma Odoom supported the renovation of Continental Alluvial Dredges building with GH 50,000.

The chief of Dunkwa, Nana Obeng Nuakoh III, MP for Upper Denkyira East- Hon. Nana Kofi Amoako,  DCE, Hon.  Anane Adabor, presiding member -Hon . Nii Richmond Dodou, Municipal Engineer – Emmanuel Tettey  and Gordon Owusu now Nana Gyekye Anim III and the Dunkwa community through communal labour worked hard to complete the renovation to ensure the school started  within the 2009 academic year.

Finally, on 30thJanuary, 2009, the school officially began training Health Assistants with a population of 80 students but not without constraints and some challenges. Olam Ghana and other benevolent individuals donated furniture and other building materials to support the school.

Currently, the College runs four (4) programmes with staff strength of eighty –five ( 85) and student population of one thousand five hundred (1500).
